Embracing Change: Why VICSEG New Futures Supports the YES Vote on the Indigenous Voice to Parliament

0 MIN READ / September 08, 2023

In a nation that prides itself on diversity, understanding, and inclusivity, there are moments that call for us to reflect on the past, acknowledge the present, and shape a more equitable future. One such moment has arrived with the upcoming referendum on the Indigenous Voice to Parliament. As an organization dedicated to fostering inclusivity and providing support, VICSEG New Futures firmly stands on the side of the YES vote. In this blog post, we delve into why supporting the YES case is not only a step towards justice but a representation of our values.

The Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum holds the promise of creating a platform for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to advise the Australian parliament and government more effectively on matters central to their wellbeing. This initiative bridges the gap that has long existed between decision-makers and Indigenous communities, recognising their unique perspectives and experiences.

The proposed Voice to Parliament will empower Indigenous representatives to voice their insights on critical issues ranging from social and spiritual wellbeing to economic prosperity. This is a crucial step towards ensuring that policies and decisions directly affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are shaped by those who understand their needs and aspirations intimately.

As proponents of change and progress, we believe that the YES vote aligns with VICSEG New Futures' mission to amplify marginalized voices and contribute to a just and inclusive society. Through our history of listening, appreciating, and acknowledging the stories of those we serve, we recognize the importance of creating a space for Indigenous voices to be heard.

In a recent newspaper letter, a profound point was raised: the referendum's outcome is not just about policy; it's about sending a message of acknowledgment, respect, and unity to our First Nations people. A NO vote would signify a rejection of their invitation to co-create a better future. It would stand as a stark refusal to acknowledge the wisdom that comes from a culture that has nurtured and sustained this land for over 65,000 years.

As we stand at this crossroads, VICSEG New Futures cannot and will not endorse a message of exclusion. We are committed to fostering a society where every individual's voice matters, regardless of their background. Our Chairperson, Marie Vassallo, and the VICSEG New Futures Board share our unwavering commitment to the YES case.

By voting YES on the Indigenous Voice to Parliament, we pledge our support to a future built on understanding, collaboration, and respect. We encourage our community, partners, and stakeholders to stand with us in this endeavor, to embrace change and embrace unity.

Together, we can walk towards a future where every voice matters, where our First Nations people are not just heard but truly listened to. Let's shape a more equitable and inclusive Australia, hand in hand.
